GCSE
Understanding the 9–1 GCSE maths grading
Dailysharing Tutors 3 min read
The 9–1 scale replaced A*–G several years ago, and it still causes confusion at results time.
The rough equivalents
A grade 4 is a standard pass and broadly comparable to the old C. A grade 5 is a strong pass and is what many sixth forms and employers now ask for. Grades 7–9 map to the old A and A*.
What actually matters for your child
- College and sixth form entry — check the specific requirement for the courses they want.
- University — GCSE maths is often a requirement for teaching, nursing and business courses.
- Confidence — a grade 5 in a subject they dreaded is a genuine achievement.
If the result is a 3
Maths and English are required to continue to 18 if a grade 4 is not achieved. Resit options exist at college and with tutoring, and a single term of focused work frequently moves a 3 to a 4 or 5.
