Times tables without the tears

Times tables without the tears

Every parent of a Year 4 child knows the feeling: the multiplication tables check is coming, and the practice book is on the table again. Rote drilling works for some children and quietly destroys confidence for others.

Start with what they already know

Children rarely freeze on the 2s, 5s and 10s. Begin there, then build outwards: the 4s are double the 2s, the 8s are double the 4s, and the 6s are double the 3s. Multiplication becomes something a child can construct, not something they have to remember.

Make it spoken before it is written

Say tables out loud in the car, in the kitchen, on the walk to school. Ten seconds of "six sevens?" once a day builds recall far faster than a page of sums.

Keep the pressure low

  • Two minutes at a time, then stop.
  • Track personal bests, never compare with a sibling.
  • Mix in the division fact — 42 ÷ 6 — so the table is understood from both directions.
