Reasonable adjustments in tuition

Reasonable adjustments in tuition

Under the Equality Act 2010, education providers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled children. Parents rarely know what to ask for.

Examples of reasonable adjustments

  • Extra time, or work broken into shorter tasks.
  • Printed rather than copied instructions.
  • A quiet space, or a seat away from a doorway.
  • Assistive technology, such as a reader or a scribe where appropriate.
  • Flexibility about how work is recorded — verbal answers before written ones.

How to ask

Put the request in writing, describe the barrier rather than the diagnosis, and suggest the adjustment you think would remove it. Providers respond better to specific, workable requests.
