Phonics at home without the flashcards battle

Phonics at home without the flashcards battle

By the end of Reception, most children can recognise around forty sounds. Getting there should not involve a nightly argument.

Little and often beats long and formal

Three minutes, twice a day, is plenty at four and five years old. Attention spans are short and that is developmentally normal.

Play with sounds, not letters

Say a word slowly — c-a-t — and ask your child to squash it together. Then swap the first sound: bat, hat, mat. This builds phonemic awareness, which matters more than letter recognition at this stage.

Read the same book many times

Repetition builds fluency and confidence. A child rereading a familiar book is not stagnating; they are consolidating.

When to seek help

If a child in Year 1 is still guessing at words rather than decoding them, or reversing sounds consistently, talk to the school. Early support is far more effective than waiting.
