Why handwriting still matters in a keyboard world

Why handwriting still matters in a keyboard world

By Year 6, a child is expected to write at speed and still be readable. Children who cannot do that lose marks in every subject, not just English.

It is a physical skill first

Handwriting depends on core strength and shoulder stability, not just finger control. Climbing, swimming and carrying shopping all help more than tracing sheets.

Three quick wins

  • Check the pencil grip. A comfortable tripod grip allows speed; a fist grip does not.
  • Use lined paper at the right size. Oversized writing on narrow lines causes cramping.
  • Ten minutes, three times a week. Short, purposeful practice copying a paragraph beats a page of letter drills.

What to avoid

Making a child rewrite work as a punishment for untidiness. It turns writing into a punishment loop, and it rarely improves legibility.
