Creative writing for independent school exams

Creative writing for independent school exams

Independent school writing tasks are usually short: twenty to thirty minutes, one prompt, no choice. Preparation is about having tools ready, not stories memorised.

Bring a bank of details

Three settings, three characters, three opening lines — practised and adaptable. Children who arrive with vivid details write far better under pressure.

Structure in one line

Problem, complication, resolution. A complete short story with a modest plot scores better than three pages of description with no ending.

Vary sentences deliberately

One short sentence for tension. One longer sentence for description. Examiners notice range.

What markers reward

Precise vocabulary, varied punctuation, controlled tense, and a clear ending. Not length, and not adult-sounding vocabulary used incorrectly.
