11 Plus & Entrance
Common 11 Plus myths, examined
Every autumn we meet families who have been given advice that costs them money and costs their child confidence. Four myths worth retiring.
"Start at five or it's too late"
Not true. Reasoning skills develop with reading and reasoning practice, and a focused Year 5 is far more effective than four anxious years.
"More papers equal more marks"
Only if the errors are analysed. Fifty papers marked but not reviewed teach very little.
"The exam decides their future"
Grammar schools are one route among many. A child who thrives at a good comprehensive does better than one who struggles in a selective school.
"Tutoring guarantees a place"
No tutor can promise a place. Anyone who does should be treated with caution. Good preparation builds ability and calm — the outcome depends on many factors.
