Algebra in Year 7: what changes and how to help

Year 7 is where maths stops being about answers and starts being about relationships between numbers. For many children that shift feels sudden.

Nothing new, everything rearranged

Algebra is arithmetic with the numbers hidden. If a child knows that 3 + 5 = 8, then 3 + x = 8 means x is 5. Framing it that way removes most of the fear.

Three habits that help

  • Write the operation. Underline what is being done to the letter before trying to undo it.
  • Keep the equals sign meaningful. Both sides balance; whatever you do to one, do to the other.
  • Substitute to check. Put the answer back in and see if it works.

Watch for the gap

If fraction work is shaky, algebra will feel impossible, because rearranging expressions leans on fractional thinking constantly. Fixing the earlier gap is usually faster than pushing on.
