11 Plus comprehension under time pressure

Eleven Plus comprehension papers are short on time by design. Speed comes from technique, not from reading faster.

Read the questions first

Not the answers — the questions. Then read the passage knowing what to look for. This one change saves most children several minutes.

Answer in the order you find them

Some questions are easier than others. Bank the retrieval questions, then return to inference.

Use the text, always

A short quotation plus a sentence of explanation scores better than a long paragraph of general opinion.

Build stamina gradually

Start with ten minutes of work, then twelve, then fifteen. Timed practice should feel manageable, not terrifying — fear reduces comprehension performance measurably.
